Dr. Michael Evans, coming from a Jewish lineage himself, feels the burden for 21st Century Israel and the nation that inhabits it. As a result, he diligently dedicates his life to the dictate to "Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem." We should join him in this endeavor for the same reason he has made it his cause—because to do so is scriptural. There are several portions of the Bible—both in the Old and New Testament that answers the question "Why should we Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem?"

God Almighty gave Jerusalem to Israel as an everlasting covenant. He swore by His own name through Abraham and his son, Jacob (Israel).

We find this "gift" described in Genesis 17:7-8: And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

It is quite obvious for anyone who reads and believes the Word of God that present day Israel is meant to be possessed by the descendents of Abraham. As a result, we need to Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem so that Abraham’s descendents can live and flourish there. This promise is alluded to in Hebrews, which states "For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself". Hebrews 6:13

God pronounced a curse upon those who curse Jerusalem

One of the disadvantages of living in 21st Century America is the fact that many people look at the idea of a curse as a voodoo legend deep from the heart of the bayous. The reality is, scriptural curses are not only real but they should be taken seriously! Again in Genesis, God made it very evident about how the rest of the world should respond to His gift to Abraham:

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." Genesis 12:1-2

We must remember, and understand, that God pronounces judgment on all nations that come against Jerusalem. Every Nation in history that has lifted their hand against Israel has been cursed. God has judged all of them mightily. Most of them either don't even exist today, or have been weakened beyond comprehension. To see what the Word says exactly, read Zechariah 2:8-9!

One other major reason we should pray for the Peace of Jerusalem is the fact that the return of our Lord and Saviour is directly related to Jerusalem. Luke tell us in Acts 1:11, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."

Dr. Michael D. Evans is an author, journalist, commentator and the head of several prominent ministries in the U.S., and Netherlands.
